How high can I fly a drone?

Short answer

For many standard recreational or “open category” operations, the ceiling is 120 m / 400 ft above the surface—but exact measurement and exceptions vary by jurisdiction.

Why

The limit keeps small unmanned aircraft separated from most crewed traffic, but helicopters and low-flying aircraft can still appear below it. “Above ground” follows terrain and is not simply altitude shown above sea level.

What to do next

  1. 01Check your jurisdiction’s official rule and map.
  2. 02Set a height warning or limit in the flight app.
  3. 03Give way and land if crewed aircraft approach.
  4. 04Account for rising ground when flying along slopes.

Important exceptions

  • Special authorisations may permit higher operations.
  • Rules around tall structures can differ.
  • A lower airspace, park or local limit may apply.
Safety note: Aircraft behaviour varies by model, firmware and configuration. For legal or safety-critical decisions, use the current manual and official aviation authority guidance.
