Can I fly a drone near an airport?

Short answer

Only when the applicable airspace and aerodrome rules allow it—and often only with prior authorisation. Do not use a simple distance circle as your only check.

Why

Controlled airspace can extend far beyond an airport boundary, while some small aerodromes have different rules. Helicopter sites and temporary restrictions are easy to miss. A flight app is a planning aid, not permission by itself.

What to do next

  1. 01Check the official or authority-recognised airspace source immediately before flight.
  2. 02Obtain any required air traffic or facility authorisation.
  3. 03Stay away from approach/departure paths and land for crewed aircraft.
  4. 04Check local takeoff and landing restrictions too.

Important exceptions

  • Rules vary by country, weight and airport type.
  • Emergency or temporary restrictions can appear at short notice.
  • Geofencing does not prove a flight is legal.
Safety note: Aircraft behaviour varies by model, firmware and configuration. For legal or safety-critical decisions, use the current manual and official aviation authority guidance.
