How far can a drone fly?

Short answer

Technical range may be kilometres, but safe and legal range is often much shorter. Battery, wind, interference and visual-line-of-sight rules usually become the real limits.

Why

A published control range is measured under ideal conditions and does not mean the aircraft can complete a round trip. Most standard operations worldwide require the pilot to keep the drone in unaided visual sight.

What to do next

  1. 01Use advertised range only to compare link robustness.
  2. 02Plan a round trip with a conservative battery reserve.
  3. 03Keep the aircraft in visual line of sight and check local rules.
  4. 04Turn around earlier when flying downwind on the outbound leg.

Important exceptions

  • Approved BVLOS commercial operations use additional procedures and equipment.
  • Trees, buildings and radio congestion can cut range dramatically.
  • Payload and temperature reduce endurance.
Safety note: Aircraft behaviour varies by model, firmware and configuration. For legal or safety-critical decisions, use the current manual and official aviation authority guidance.
