Why
A published control range is measured under ideal conditions and does not mean the aircraft can complete a round trip. Most standard operations worldwide require the pilot to keep the drone in unaided visual sight.
What to do next
- 01Use advertised range only to compare link robustness.
- 02Plan a round trip with a conservative battery reserve.
- 03Keep the aircraft in visual line of sight and check local rules.
- 04Turn around earlier when flying downwind on the outbound leg.
Important exceptions
- Approved BVLOS commercial operations use additional procedures and equipment.
- Trees, buildings and radio congestion can cut range dramatically.
- Payload and temperature reduce endurance.
Safety note: Aircraft behaviour varies by model, firmware and configuration. For legal or safety-critical decisions, use the current manual and official aviation authority guidance.
