Can I fly a drone in the rain?

Short answer

Usually, no. Most consumer drones are not rated for rain, and moisture can damage motors, electronics, batteries and camera systems.

Why

Water can bridge electrical contacts, corrode components and interfere with vision sensors. Even if a drone survives one wet flight, delayed corrosion can cause a later failure. Check the exact IP rating in your aircraft manual—marketing phrases like “weather resistant” are not the same as a tested ingress-protection rating.

What to do next

  1. 01Land as soon as rain begins; do not rely on obstacle sensing in poor visibility.
  2. 02Disconnect the battery after landing and dry the aircraft at room temperature.
  3. 03Do not charge or reuse a wet, swollen or damaged battery.
  4. 04Follow the manufacturer’s inspection guidance before the next flight.

Important exceptions

  • Some enterprise aircraft publish an IP rating and approved operating envelope.
  • Mist, sea spray and wet snow can be as harmful as rain.
  • Legal visibility and cloud-clearance rules may stop the flight before the hardware limit does.
Safety note: Aircraft behaviour varies by model, firmware and configuration. For legal or safety-critical decisions, use the current manual and official aviation authority guidance.
